Roles and permissions
What owners, admins, editors, reviewers and viewers can do in a team workspace, and how to change someone's role.
Everyone in a team workspace has exactly one role. Roles are checked on the server for every change, not just hidden in the interface.
| Role | Can |
|---|---|
| Owner | Everything, including billing, transferring ownership and deleting the workspace. There is one owner. |
| Admin | Manage members (invite, change roles, remove), seats, credit caps and workspace settings. Everything an editor can do. |
| Editor | Create and edit Things and projects, commit, branch and merge, create share links, mark team parts. |
| Reviewer | View, export, comment and approve review requests. Can't edit geometry. This is the "commenter" role. |
| Viewer | View Things and export what the plan allows. Can't edit or comment. |
What happens when a role changes
- The change takes effect right away. If a viewer has a Thing open, its editor turns view-only: tools disappear, parameters can't be changed, and any save the old session tries is refused by the server.
- The person gets a notification with their new role.
- Role changes, invites and removals are recorded in the workspace audit log.
Change someone's role
On Members & seats, admins and the owner pick a new role from the menu in that person's row. A few rules:
- The owner role only moves with Make owner… (a transfer), never from the role menu.
- You can't change your own role.
- Admins can change other admins.
Remove someone
Open the ⋯ menu on their row and choose Remove from workspace…. They lose access immediately; everything they made stays in the workspace with its history. Their seat becomes free, and you can drop the paid seat at the same time (see Seats and team billing).
Try it
Invite a colleague as a Reviewer so they can leave comments on your Things without changing them. Promote them to Editor later from the same page.
